A Story Book For Children In Ethiopia About Post-Polio Syndrome

Once upon a time, in the beautiful land of Ethiopia, there was a little boy named Abebe. Abebe loved playing football with his friends and exploring the lush green fields near his village. He was always full of energy and had a big smile on his face.

One sunny day, Abebe woke up feeling a bit tired and his legs felt weaker than usual. His parents noticed this and took him to the local clinic, where the kind doctor told them that Abebe had something called Post-polio syndrome. Abebe didn’t understand what that meant, so the doctor decided to explain it to him using a story.

“Imagine, Abebe,” the doctor began, “that your body is like a strong and sturdy tree. Just like a tree grows tall and strong, your body was growing strong too. But sometimes, a strong wind can blow and shake the tree, making it weaker. That’s what happened to your body, my dear.”

Abebe listened intently, trying to picture the story in his mind. The doctor continued, “You see, when you were a baby, a tiny germ called a virus tried to make you sick. But your body fought it off and made you healthy again. However, that virus left a little mark on your body, like a secret message.”

Abebe’s eyes widened with curiosity. “What’s the secret message, Doctor?” he asked.

The doctor smiled and said, “The secret message is that sometimes, when you grow older, your body might feel a bit weaker, just like the tree that was shaken by the wind. But don’t worry, Abebe, because you are strong and brave. You can still do many things, even if it takes a little more effort.”

Abebe nodded, feeling a little relieved. He knew he could face any challenge that came his way. The doctor continued, “You might need to use a special brace or crutches to help you walk, just like a tree might need a little support to stand tall. But remember, Abebe, you are not alone. Your family, friends, and community are here to support you every step of the way.”

Abebe’s face lit up with a smile. He knew his family and friends would always be there for him. The doctor concluded, “So, my dear Abebe, even though you have this condition, it doesn’t define who you are. You are still the same brave and adventurous boy who loves playing football and exploring the beautiful fields of Ethiopia. You can achieve anything you set your mind to!”

Abebe hugged the doctor tightly, feeling grateful for the story and the doctor’s kind words. From that day forward, Abebe faced his condition with courage and determination. He continued to play football with his friends, exploring the fields, and spreading joy wherever he went.

And so, in the land of Ethiopia, Abebe’s story became an inspiration for all the children who faced challenges. They learned that no matter what condition they had, they could still shine brightly and make their dreams come true. The end
